The Angry Bird Movie

Movies based on video games are nothing new. They are usually not very good. Hello, “Super Mario Brothers.” Hello “Tomb Raider.” However, a movie based on a game that is a downloadable app for your phone? One might say Hollywood is getting desperate. That desperation pays off today, May 20 because “The Angry Birds Movie” is something the whole family can enjoy.

Red (Jason Sudeikis) is an angry bird. It has gotten to the point to where not only does he live on the outskirts of the town, he also has to attend anger management classes. When some green pigs come visit Bird Island, Red is the only one who is suspicious of them. What are those pigs really after? If they are up to no good, what can the birds do? Well, they do have a nifty sling shot at their disposal.

The key element for a family film is that they have to be fun for the entire family. Too often many of these movies are geared towards children, while their parents are clawing their faces off in hopes they don’t have to sit there much longer. That will not be the case with “The Angry Birds Movie.” They put together a good story and there are laughs for both the children and adults. Some jokes only the parents will get.

If you’re someone who has spent hours playing the app, you’ll be surprised how many elements of the game have been woven into “The Angry Birds Movie.” Red is the most recognizable character of the game, but those who know it will recognize the fast “yellow bird” who is Chuck (Josh Gad) and the black bird that blows up, Bomb (Danny McBride). They are now fully developed characters instead of just birds you just launched at the pigs.

Like many animated family films, this one is being shown in 3D and it is one of the rare ones where seeing it in that format is worth the extra money. The 3D effects are not on the same level as you see in the “Despicable Me” movies, but they make good use of the background and foreground contrasts and there are a number of fun “coming at you” moments put in there too.

“The Angry Birds Movie” is the first family film of the summer. There will be more to come, but this film has already set the bar pretty high. If the other movies can reach there, then families are in for a good time this long summer season. It is rated PG for rude humor and action.
