My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

We all know how much Hollywood loves to churn out movie sequels. The moment an original movie shows a sign of success, you can bet a part 2 of that movie will be out within 1-3 years soon after. You may think that would hold true to the #1 romantic comedy of all time, especially if it made over $200 million; however, that is not the case with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” opening today, March 25, fourteen years after the first one came out.

The Portokalos family is back! Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett) are still married and have a teenaged girl, Paris, who is getting ready to go to college. As always, her Greek family all have opinions about where Paris should go to school. However, there is another matter at hand, a wedding is going to take place. One that no one saw coming.

Nia Vardalos wrote “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” as she did with the original and once again she turned in a real solid script. The screenplay is full of unique characters, it’s a good new storyline, it has some nice tender family moments and it is filled with lots of laughs.

The laughs come from all sides in this movie. There are sight gags, funny lines, laughs that just come from the situation the characters find themselves in at the moment and some of the actors just have a natural funny talent to make us laugh. Bess Meisler, who returns once again to play Mana-Yiayia, the grandmother of the family, does not have one word of dialogue in the whole movie, yet steals every scene she is in and is flat out hysterical!

Kirk Jones does a good job in directing this film and keeping the tone light while keeping the film flowing smoothly. Elena Kampouris is a great new addition to the family as Paris, who tells one character in the movie that the reason why she did not join Greek Club in high school is that she lives it every day of her life. Finally, Nia Vardalos reminds of what a great comedic actress she can be and if you can’t find any great parts out there, write it yourself.

When “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” came out in 2002, no one expected to become the huge hit it did. While “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” has huge competition this weekend, it is the best new movie opening. It’s too early to tell if it will do as well as the original, but it is a worthy successor. It is rated PG-13 for some suggested material
