Monkey Man

There is an old saying, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” There may also be a saying in Hollywood that goes something like, “Revenge movies is a dish that best serves our bottom line.” Whether that is something said among studio executives is unknown but the that type of action movie has been a tried and true way studios often make huge bucks. Look as recently as the John Wick movies and even farther back with the Death Wish franchise. “Monkey Man” is the latest entry into this kind of story and it is directed Dev Patel making his feature film directing debut.

Kid (Patel) is a man with a lot of rage thanks to a deep childhood trauma. He does nightly club fighting wearing a monkey mask, where is always loses. He finds his way into the underbelly of the city which leads him to find the people who were responsible for is tragic beginnings.

The action genre is a hard nut to crack. Audiences have seen almost everything and it’s very difficult to give them something new, even more for a first time director. Dev Patel was clearly influenced by Asian action films like “The Raid”. The camera work is often choppy and the violence is very in your face. The music score is also very loud and it almost felt like the director made it that way so the audience would think they are watching something very intense. A cleaver trick, but it often doesn’t work. However, in the climax of the film that eases up and makes for better action sequences.

In the end “Monkey Man” is a messy film. It’s unlikely to end up as an action classic. However, those who are fans of the action genre should enjoy themselves. There’s not a lot of character depth and the story of this revenge tale is commonplace, but if you are just looking to shut your brain off and just want to see some fun, bloody action then this is for you.
