Minions the Rise of Gru.

Sequels are the bread and butter to Hollywood studios. The only thing better than having a hit movie on your hands is the ability to slap a number “2” at the end of it. However, there are only so many stories you can tell when you get to the higher single digit numbers so the executives found something new, they could make a buck off, spinoffs! One of the most beloved characters to come along lately have been the Minions from the “Despicable Me” franchise. They got their first in 2015, now they are back for a second go round in “Minions: The Rise of Gru”.

This outing serves as both a sequel and a prequel as we see Gru (Steve Carell) as a child wanting to join his favorite team of villains, the Vicious 6. His dream comes true when they grant him an interview, but when they see he is only a child they immediately dismiss him. He does not take the rejection well and goes from wanting to join them to finding himself in their crosshairs thanks to his actions. He’ll need the help from his Minions to get himself out of this pickle

There are plenty of laughs to be had here that the whole family can enjoy. There are even some jokes only parents will get. That is refreshing in that many family films only cater to children and parents find themselves having to endure those showings. However, despite the laughs the movie is all over the place plot-wise.

There are a lot of “mini adventures” in this story, not just focusing on one character either. One story is Gru, one involves ones set on Minions, one focusing on another Minion, and so on. Everything gets stretched thin here. Studios want to squeeze every dime out of a franchise that they can, and you better believe Universal Pictures is squeezing this one dry. Who knows if there will be anything left in 2024 when “Despicable Me 4” is set to come out.
