Here and There

“Here and There” the award winning film at both The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival returns to South Florida at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale for a limited engagement.  The film can be seen starting on June 9th and will be playing there until June 17th.

The movie tells the story of Robert (David Thornton) a middle-aged New Yorker who finds himself in a deep funk.  He’s been kicked out of his apartment, kicked out of his friend’s apartment and has almost no where else to turn.  He meets Branko (Branislav Trifunovic) who helps him move and gives him a job too.  Branko has a bigger job for Robert, to travel to his native land of Serbia to marry his girlfriend so she can return with Robert back to the Unites States.  Robert agrees, but while in Serbia ends up falls for Branko’s mother.  How’s THAT for a twist?  At the same time Branko is having a very hard time coming up with the money he promised to pay Robert.

While the story is intriguing it is slow movie.  The running time is under an hour and a half, but it feels longer.  It feels like you are in Robert’s fun with him.  He’s not likable or unlikable; he’s just there, doing what he’s got to do to get some money for himself.  He’s not a bad person, deep down we know he is good.  We do feel sorry for Branko, who is having trouble as an immigrant trying to make his way in the harshness that is New York City.

For a film that was made for under a half-million dollars (reportedly), it’s a pretty high quality film as far as how it looks on the screen.  It was film on both the street of New York and Serbia.  The actors all do fine jobs.  One aspect of the film that makes it more bearable than some other independent films is that the musical score of the film can be described as “fun”.  Even as poor, depressed Robert walks around New York City he has a light hearted score that follows him around.  It may sound out of place; but, actually works well for this film.  Lovers of independent movies will probably get more out of this than others who just want to see some mindless fun when they come to a movie.
