You have to view foreign films through a different lens. Some moviegoers say they do not like reading subtitles through the entire movie. Others are so used to Hollywood production styles that they are uncomfortable with change; change is “foreign” to them. However, those who choose not to give foreign films a chance, for whatever reason, could be missing out on some real gems. That is not to say that movies that are made in other countries are all good, but they certainly can provide a story and style that may be interesting and provocative.

“Anaïs in Love” is the story of a young woman. Anaïs is played by Anaïs Demoustier; and, yes, she has the same first name as her character. Anais who begins an affair with an older man, but, later,  falls in love with the woman who is living with that same man.

Anaïs Demoustier is in every scene and it’s because of her bubbly presence that this picture is so enjoyable. Her character has more than her share of flaws. Her life appears to be without direction. She experiences a range of emotions within seconds of one another other: yet, from the moment she appears on screen holding some flowers while running through the city, you are mesmerized by her.

In the end, this is a love story. It IS in the title, after all. Here is the difference between a movie made in Hollywood and one from France. In a Hollywood production, the fact that the two people falling in love are women would likely be a central theme in the movie. Even today, in many circles, it’s still “taboo”. In this case, that part of the story doesn’t even raise an eyebrow. In fact, it is not acknowledged at all. From the filmmakers perspective they are saying, “Hey, love is love and that’s beautiful” The age difference between the women is also barely noted.

This is not railing against Hollywood films. Far from it. Frankly, it would be great if a Hollywood director would notice Anaïs Demoustier. She does speak English in this film and it would be a great treat to see her in a big blockbuster someday.
